Notes from the Installation Team

The CDT 20 watt solar module is a high quality Chinese made panel. It has the strongest frame that we have ever seen on a small solar panel. At 3/8" total thickness it also has the lowest profile that we've seen. It is an excellent choice for maintaing batteries in small campers or boats. If your boat or small camper has a battery kill switch, the power should be killed while in storage.

I've been using a 20 watt solar panel to keep the group 27 starting battery and both of the group 29 deep cycle batteries in my boat fully charged while in winter storage. During boating season while my boat is trailered I bungee cord the 20 watt solar panel to my outdrive to keep the deep cycle batteries charged.

You can build your own portable charging system with a CDT20, a Morningstar SunGuard 4.5 amp charge controller, a section of 12 or 14 guage low voltage landscape wire and a pair of alligator clamps. Simply connect the wires from the solar panel to the charge controller, stick the charge controller to the back of the CDT 20 with 3M outdoor rated two-sided tape. Connect the low voltage wire to the charge controller, then connect the alligator clamps to the low voltage wire and your done.

If roof mounting you'll need some inexpensive solar panel mounts such as our Flat Z Mounts. You'll need one bag of four. The Flat Z Mounts will raise the module about 3/4" allowing air to flow under the solar panel for cooling.

The mounting holes on the frame are spaced 1 7/8" from each end. The center mounting hole is at 9 7/16".

What you need to Acquire
1 - Morningstar SunGuard charge controller
10 - 12 feet of 12 or 14 gauge low voltage landscape wire (available at big box hardware stores)
2 - Alligator clamps (available at any auto parts store)
1 - Stick of heat shrink (available at auto parts store)
1 - ATO fuse link and 3 amp fuse (if you want to add a fuse to the system)
